This was painted during the first Gulf War when Iraq was firing scud missiles into Israel and families there were wearing gas masks. I thought how strange this would be, particularly for infants, to see their parents transformed into these surreal, elephantine-type creatures. I have painted this as a 'portrait' with scurrying figures in the background and have made reference to Rembrandt's painting 'Belshazzar's Feast where the finger of God has written " you have weighed in the balance and found wanting".
To tell the truth I have always had a strong feeling that the apocalyptic dilemma that faces us all across the globe now, would occur. People have often written about the timeless quality in many of my paintings which is why this is of even more relevance in 2020.
